According to reports, there are around 200 women offering their services illegally just in Graz alone. The women and their backers look for apartments that they turn into illegal brothels for a couple of weeks, before moving to another apartment. Since there is not much tourism going on in Graz right now, the apartments for rent are mostly vacant, so there are many options to choose from for the girls and their pimps.

Since there is a big demand for prostitution services, and no legal method to get it, illegal prostitution is booming right now. The clients are checked before they get the address

Although the women are not protected when they work illegally, they figured out a way to check their potential customers before the session. The clients are required to do a quick video chat before they get the address of the apartment. This isn’t much of a protective measure, but it is still better than nothing for the women who choose to work illegally. Unfortunately, since they need to keep their occupation a secret, they do not get any protection from the government or someone like a legal brothel owner.

Illegally operating women do not have their green health cards

Since the women who work from such apartments do this completely illegally, they are not required to be checked by a doctor for STDs on a regular basis. This means that any of the illegally operating women could be spreading sexually transmittable diseases to their clients. Additionally, nobody is checking on the women and their clients if they follow the current COVID-19 hygiene laws, which further increases the chance of the virus spreading. On top of this, the women are also not paying any tax for the services that they are offering, which makes the government even more eager to stop them.

The women who are caught are getting fined

In case the police do find one of these apartments, the women are fined anywhere between 400 and 1000 euros. The clients are not fined unless they have ignored the COVID-19 laws that are currently in effect. Additionally, the landlords who rent out the apartments to the ladies for illegal prostitution are also getting fined by the police.

Police raid on illegal apartments in Vienna

The Viennese Police Department has launched a raid on illegal prostitution at the start of March. According to our sources, the raids took place between March 1 and 7 and there were 171 reports, including the women and the landlords of the apartments. 39 women were fined, most of which have been Romanian girls whose age ranged from 19 to 38. In total, around 30,000 euros worth of fines were handed out to the women and the landlords.

Summary

As you can see illegal prostitution is on the rise not only in Vienna, but also in other cities in Austria. Unfortunately, since the women are not allowed to operate through legal means, they need to do this if they want to keep making money. The police are working hard to end these types of operations, but with so many new illegal apartments appearing constantly they are having a hard time.

Hopefully brothels and other similar adult entertainment business will be allowed to open again soon. This would mean that the women do not have to work secretly from private apartments and that they could get the protection and benefits that come with working in a real and legal brothel.

Human trafficking shifts from street prostitution to private apartments

In the years before the Corona Virus lockdown human trafficking has slowly shifted from street prostitution to operating from illegal apartments. In fact, there were 113 victims and 150 suspects who were apprehended last year just in the area. Additionally, the number of ladies who worked in brothels has also dropped by a significant amount last year compared to previous years. Since there is currently a lockdown and ban on prostitution, more and more women turn to working from apartments, illegally.

Unfortunately, in these cases they do not have any protection, so human traffickers have an easier time exploiting them, as they have nobody to turn to for help.

More and more underage girls are forced into prostitution using the Loverboy method

Sadly, we are seeing an increased number of underage girls who are being forced into selling their bodies for somebody else’s gains. These young women are usually lured into human trafficking using the Loverboy method.

If you are not familiar with this term, it basically boils down to good looking young men luring insecure ladies to foreign countries where the women are forced into prostitution. The loverboys disguise themselves as perfect boyfriend material; they shower the ladies with gifts and affection, only to metaphorically stab them in the back as soon as the opportunity arises. After a few weeks of being in a relationship, the loverboy will bring up the subject of moving to another country where the ladies are promised well-paying job opportunities and overall better living conditions. Unfortunately, once they have crossed the border, their documents are usually taken away from them and they are forced into prostitution by physical abuse or blackmail.

Not long ago there was an arrest of two separate pimp gangs who used similar methods to lure women into human trafficking. According to our sources, the women who were forced into prostitution were between the ages of 19 and 30 and all of their earnings have been taken away from them. Police have found over 1,000 euros in cash, cell phones and other valuables in the apartments where the women were forced to work from.

As weird as it sounds, a 75-year-old man was assaulted and injured in his apartment in Wahring. An unknown male sneaked into his apartment while he was having sex with a prostitute from a park.

As the police found out so far, the old man invited a young woman (allegedly between 25 and 30 years old) to his apartment for some action. There was nothing unordinary here – besides the fact that the woman’s friend showed up with another woman. And while the apartment owner was busy with the first girl, the second opened the apartment and allowed the male stranger to enter. He attacked the 75-year-old pensioner, hitting him and tying him up.

The investigation is still going on, as the police are searching for fugitives

While he was tied and unable to move, the guests “eased” him for a five-digit amount of euros in both cash and various valuables. The man says that it took him more than 30 minutes to free himself, and that he called the police as soon as he could. He didn’t have any serious injuries, mostly scratches and bruises. The suspects are nowhere to be found though, and the police are assuming that this trio is actually a group of professionals who carefully chose their targets – mostly lonely and vulnerable old men.

Possible connection to a different robbery?

Another similarly-framed robbery occurred on that same night. A 17-year-old boy was supposed to have a blind date with a girl named Larissa, whom he met and spoke to on Instagram for a few days. She invited him to her apartment, but instead of a pretty girl, he was ambushed by two unknown men who were waiting in the apartment building. And to make things that much worse, the boy withdrew a few hundred euros before the meeting, but the date quickly turned around. The two stole the victim’s money and phone, but he was able to escape the fistfight unharmed.

The police made an immediate search for the two suspects, however, they were unsuccessful, as the victim couldn’t remember too many details and was only able to provide a vague description of his attackers.

According to our sources, the exchange of ownership has been finalized on the 19^th of February. Allegedly, the price of the building was set at eleven million euros and the new owners do not wish to reveal their identity just yet. Additionally, it is still unclear if the building will be reopened as a brothel in the future or if the name will stay. In case the new owner wishes to use the Pascha name in the future, they will need to pay a license fee to the owner of the brand name.

We are not sure at this time if the Pascha brothel in Cologne will be open again once the restrictions have been lifted. Currently, brothel owners are not able to open up their businesses to clients because of the Corona Virus laws that are in effect. A 22-year-old and her ex-boyfriend are accused of forcing an acquaintance into prostitution for two weeks, after which they stole her money.

It all happened in Vienna – The accusation that the prosecutor, Sonja Herbst, comes with against Daniela D. and Ahmed T. is really unpleasant: In February 2018, Daniela and Ahmed are said to have forced a 32-year-old to resort to prostitution while taking away the money she earned. The woman has just escaped from forced prostitution and was looking for shelter with the couple.  Judge Daniel Schmitzberger has to clarify whether this accusation against the former couple is true.

He starts by sending the first defendant out of the hall and begins questioning the second defendant, Ahmed. The 28-year-old employee does not plead guilty and actually doesn’t even know how he got into the whole thing. He got to know and love his ex-gf, the 22-year-old first defendant, in a disco in 2017. Later, the Venezuelan woman started living in his small apartment.

Girlfriend asking for shelter for a fellow Venezuelan

According to Ahmed, a friend from Daniela’s home named Vanessa contacted her in February 2018 about finding shelter with them, T. did not mind. “Did you ask the woman for rent?” The judge asked as soon as he could. “No, not at first. She said she has no money. But then she went to Lugner City with Daniela and bought a lot of things. Certainly for 200 to 300 euros.” When Ahmed asked her to contribute to the housing costs, Vanessa refused. So, she moved out after ten to fourteen days.

Apparently, Ahmed T. did not speak to the woman directly. Because the Egyptian-born Austrian does not speak Spanish, in which the two women talked lively and a lot. His girlfriend D., in turn, could not speak neither German nor Arabic. They made do with a translation program and broken English. In fact, he did not talk to Vanessa at all.

“Didn’t want to continue with this shit”

“Did you know that Vanessa pursued prostitution during the time?” Judge Schmitzberger asks the second defendant. He says that he wasn’t aware of this, but at the same time he wasn’t there all the time because he was working. “Did your girlfriend tell you she was working as a sex-worker for money?” – “No, not exactly. Only later. She said the group behind her was stronger than her and would threaten her parents. I understood then that she didn’t want to continue with this shit.” T. sums up about a year in 2017/18 with the first defendant.

Daniela confirms Ahmed’s story when interrogated and says she was brought to Austria from Venezuela in 2017 under false promises. At that time, she had no other means than to work in a sex-club or something similar, so she had to pursue prostitution in one way or the other. She was allowed to keep part of the money and finally managed to break away from the group, against which separate proceedings were running.

First accused says she warned her friend

Vanessa already knew Daniela from a beauty contest in Venezuela. “She was my friend,” explains the heavily pregnant D. to the judge. And she should have known that D. was in Austria, because she called her. “She asked how my work is like. I said that it wasn’t such a good experience and that I had to prostitute myself,” the 22-year-old Venezuelan woman describes. “But she came afterwards anyway.” – “Can you explain how that happened if you already warned her?” Asks Schmitzberger. “I can’t really understand it. But I can imagine, because you don’t earn much in Venezuela.”

On February 8, 2018, Vanessa informed Daniela via WhatsApp that the police had been at the secret prostitute’s accommodation and that the group that had brought her to Austria sent her on the streets. After consulting with her friend, the second defendant, Vanessa then moved in with them.

30 percent from all her earnings

“She was afraid that she would run out of money and wanted to continue with prostitution,” claims Daniela, the first defendant. “I still had a number from Kontakt-Bazar and helped her with the organization.” – “What did you do there?”, asks the judge. “We both sent messages to customers and made appointments.” – “What did Vanessa use you for?” – “I had the phone and the registration at the Kontakt-Bazar was already paid for.” – “How much did you get for the organization?” – “30 percent.” – “Do you think that is appropriate?” – “At the time, it seemed appropriate to me. Registration alone costs from 150 to 200 Euros.”

In the almost two weeks of living together, there were a total of eight customers who paid 80 euros for half an hour and 150 euros for an hour with Vanessa, says the first defendant. Nothing ever happened in their own apartment, they would always drive to the hotel or the apartment of the client. Daniela admits that she also organized taxis for her compatriot, as she was the one to speak English better.

Job offer as a waitress?

Before Vanessa begins her questioning, the judge sends the two defendants out of the courtroom to avoid a possibility of fear on the witness’s part. When asked by Judge Schmitzberger, the 32-year-old describes how she came to Austria. “There was a job offer in Venezuela which said that I should be able to work as a waitress in a restaurant, in Vienna” she recalls. “When I arrived here in January 2018, I saw that that wasn’t the case,” she sums up.

Daniela had known Vanessa from the beauty contest, but had no contact with her before she crossed the Atlantic. Vanessa claims that she only found out in Vienna that D. also had to work for the group. After the raid, she searched and found D. on Instagram and told her about her situation. “I only had 1,700 euros and didn’t know where to go.”

The judge is taken aback. “You are in a foreign country, have just been released from forced prostitution and have 1,700 euros in cash? Why didn’t you go straight to the airport and buy a ticket back home?” – “I didn’t know this was possible. I also had a return ticket …” – “Then why didn’t you use it?” – “It was only valid for the end of March.”

Allegedly, Vanessa had to spend 60 euros rent per day

So, she came to the two accused’s apartment, but the recording by them shows a completely different story. “D. said I have to give T. 60 euros,” Vanessa claims. A day, and when Vanessa was worried about her savings, her friend told her this: “Then Daniela said that I just have to work!” The first defendant organized the meeting, with six to eight men she had to have sex every day, according to the witness.

Prosecutor Herbst is skeptical. “You said you had 1,700 euros? Why didn’t you just leave? Can’t you get a hotel room with that money?” She asks. “What would I have got out of it?” Is Vanessa’s counter-question. “You shouldn’t have prostituted yourself against your will?” The prosecutor points out as an option.

Vanessa also said that at the orders of the first defendant, Daniela, she had to do things that she did not want to do. The judge leafed through the files, among which was the WhatsApp chat with the first defendant, that the witness made available to the court.

The first defendant reportedly threatened Vanessa

In this context, it is also vague why the witness was so afraid of the ten years younger Daniela. Vanessa claims that D. threatened to harm her family in Venezuela.

The judge, continuing to leaf through the chat logs, noticed something else: “How did you communicate with Ms. D.?” He asks with interest the witness. “Only via Whatsapp”, Vanessa replies. “You presented me with messages from five days in February 2018. That’s not very much contact when you supposedly had to visit up to eight customers a day,” notes Judge Schmitzberger. In addition, there are no threats, except that the customer would be lost if she would arrive late, like half an hour late.

Why not report it to the police?

After almost two weeks, Vanessa claims to have moved out from the defendants’ apartment and given up prostitution. “Why not more?” The judge asked. “I was robbed, my passport and my money were gone, I went to the police and reported it. D. tried to contact me several times after, then she disappeared,” the witness claims. “And did you tell the police that you were being exploited?” – “No, I only reported the theft. I was afraid.” Vanessa answers  “But why? You knew you were going to quit? Then what did you have to fear?”, Schmitzberger cannot understand. He doesn’t receive any answers.

In March 2018, Vanessa actually used her return ticket mentioned before. And came back to Vienna in May 2019. “Why is that?” Asks Judge Schmitzberger. “Because I was threatened in Venezuela.” – “From the same group of perpetrators who originally brought you to Vienna?” – The witness nods. “But why come back to Austria, where exactly part of this group of perpetrators is?” – “In Venezuela I went to the police and a women’s protection center, where I was ignored. Here, In Austria, or more exactly in Vienna I was able to speak to the authorities.”

Late accusation

Before the next question, the judge breathes in and out deep under his mouth and nose mask. “It wasn’t really in a hurry. You entered the country on May 21 2019 and filed a complaint against the two defendants on January 16, 2020. Why did you wait for half a year?” “Well, I was here for two months once, then I went to Caritas”, Vanessa evades the question. She applied for asylum in August. “When was the first questioning?” – “In December 2019.” – “And the report comes a month later,” the judge stated succinctly.

The public prosecutor became interested in something else: “What did you live on from May to August 2019?” – “I brought money with me from Venezuela.” – “What did you work there?” – “Advertising and Marketing” is Vanessa’s answer.

Vanessa’s legal representative sees no motive for lying. The Judge on the other hand…

At the end of the proceedings, Vanessa’s legal representative still, brazenly, demands 7,500 euros from the two accused, which is at least the amount of money they are said to have taken from the witness. In her closing remarks, she also tries to convince the judge that the charges are correct, since her client has no reason to incriminate the two accused. She was already a victim of the other group anyway.

However, Judge Schmitzberger sees it completely differently and approves with the two accused, D. and T. Their responsibility was “understandable and credible”, he explains his decision. Vanessa, on the other hand, “I just didn’t think it was credible”. The many contradictions that appeared while questioning her make him doubt that any coercion has been exercised against her. The public prosecutor agrees with this assessment and the acquittals are therefore final.

The Corona crisis is threatening the economic existence of many sex workers. In light of these events, a Dominatrix has founded a professional Association for Sex Workers.

During the summer of 2020, prostitutes in Austria were only allowed to go about their work and receive customers for four months. However, since November 2020, sex working services have been banned again due to the high number of COVID infections in the country – in brothels, sex clubs, pleasure houses and the likes there has been the dead pants situation, again.

Even in the four months of last summer when sex working was possible, business was anything but lucrative for the sex workers. Many clients decided to stay at home and did not feel like going for love services in a brothel or a sex club. And, according to the dominatrix and activist Shiva Prugger, there were several reasons why.

The beginning of the Helfen ist sexy campaign

“Due to a lot of people being affected by shorter working times or by working from home, it was not possible anymore to go to sex clubs and see a sex worker as often or as long as usual” Prugger told Radio Wien. Many of Prugger’s colleagues are struggling to merely survive. But now, with the Helfen ist sexy campaign (Helping is sexy), she is collecting donations for sex workers in need.

In addition, certain obstacles make it difficult, if not inaccessible, to get money from the hardship fund. “This is also due, for example, to the fact that as a sex worker you could not have an Austrian account number and, therefore, you could not submit the application for the hardship fund” the dominatrix adds.

According to the her, many prostitutes had already accumulated pretty big debts during the first lockdown and were now in a real financial crisis. “This also increases the pressure to ultimately work illegally,” Prugger told the Standard.

1,000 sex workers supplied with food

These are the reasons why Shiva Prugger founded the Berufsvertretung Sexarbeit (BSÖ) (Sex Work Association), to help her colleagues. This has been around since August 2020. The Sex Work Association is using the advice center SOPHIE der Volkshilfe Wien as the club’s headquarters, reports ORF Wien.

The same advice center, SOPHIE, supplied around 1,000 sex workers with food in 2020, the majority of which was financed by donations, the report says. There are almost 8,000 sex workers registered in Austria – most of them from eastern EU countries.

As you might already know, there is currently a lockdown of brothels in Vienna. All types of adult entertainment venues are required to be closed up until December 23, and the lockdown might even be extended after that. Since the women are not allowed to work legally, many of them turn to illegal prostitution through private apartments. Additionally, there are also owners who choose to open up their business despite the current ban that’s in effect. Hotel owner opens business amid Corona Virus lockdown

The police have recently conducted a raid on a hotel in Vienna that was reported to be housing illegally working prostitutes. According to the police, people have been reporting frequent activity and suspicious people going in and out of the establishment.

In addition to being open amid the lockdown, the hotel was also lacking the required documents to operate legally. The owner didn’t have an operating facility permit and the establishment was lacking in fire protection equipment and the escape routes were not properly set up either.

The police have arrested six people in the raid and filed charges against more. Some of the charges were against people who were living in the establishment without reporting a new place of residence. People who spend more than three days in a hotel per week are required to register a new home address.

The owner of the hotel closed down the establishment voluntarily after the raid. The spokesperson who reported this news to the media said that if the hotel opens again illegally, the owner will lose his permit forever. The owner is only allowed to open once the ban has been lifted and the correct measures have been taken in acquiring the legal permit.

Many prostitutes turn to illegal prostitution

Since the lockdown has been introduced, we are receiving many reports of illegally operating sexworkers who work from private apartments for the time being. There have been over 30 reports filed by the police in their last raid on private apartments on November 24 and 25 against illegally operating women. After the raids, four of the twelve apartments have been closed and the owners reported and fined for allowing illegally operating ladies in the establishments.

Naturally, the increase in illegal prostitution is in correlation with the lockdown that went into effect not long ago. Since the women can’t work legally, they turn to illegal means to make money. In 2020 alone, the police had to file more than 400 reports under the prostitution act.

The frequency of police raids has increased exponentially since the lockdown was introduced. The women who work from apartments illegally face large fines, which is a huge problem for them in itself. Four Romanian pimps arrested last week

According to Sex Vienna sources, the four men were found as a result of multiple raids on illegal prostitution by the Tyrolean police. The police have said that the two gangs operated similarly, using the same illegal tactics. The gangs advertised the women through online platforms and they operated from illegal apartments.

The police records show that the Romanian men were between the ages of 31 and 34. At the time of writing, two of the suspects have been arrested, while the other two are under custody but are still being questioned. In these raids on four different apartments, the police have seized more than 1,000 euros in cash, multiple cell phones and two cars from the suspects. The police have announced that according to their current investigations there is no correlation between the two gangs. Naturally, none of the men confessed to their crimes during their interrogation.

The women had their money taken by the pimps

According to reports, the women who were working for the pimp gangs were between the ages of 19 and 30. Some of the women were recruited in Romania and promised good paying jobs and better living conditions in Austria by the pimps. Once they have crossed the border, the women had to have sex with numerous clients every day and most of their earnings have been taken from them by their pimps.

If you are unaware, there is currently a curfew in Austria that was introduced because of the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in the country. As a result of this, all types of brothels and other adult entertainment venues are required to be closed until further notice. According to State Police of Vienna, escorts in the city are officially allowed from today. The administrative department of the Police has just sent an email to clubs and escort agencies with the newest updates in this topic.

In the email they covered these topics:Prostitution in bars is prohibited until December 23, 2020. The ban might be extended.
