• What Makes a Brothel Legal in Austria?

What Makes a Brothel Legal in Austria?

In Austria, the regulation of brothels is a complex subject governed by both federal and regional laws. Understanding what makes a brothel legal in Austria involves exploring the legal framework, health regulations, licensing requirements, and the rights of sex workers.

This article offers a comprehensive overview of the essential elements that define a legal brothel in Austria, providing clarity for business owners, workers, and clients alike.

Legal Framework Governing Brothels in Austria

Prostitution in Austria is legal and regulated, but the operation of brothels is subject to stringent rules. The core legislation stems from the Prostitution Act (Prostitutionsgesetz), which provides the basis for licensing and operational standards. However, each federal state (Bundesland) in Austria enacts its own specific regulations, which means that the details can vary significantly between regions such as Vienna, Tyrol, or Salzburg.

The law aims to balance public health, safety, and order with the rights and freedoms of sex workers and business operators. It prohibits illegal activities such as human trafficking and exploitation while allowing sex work under controlled conditions.

Licensing Requirements for Legal Brothels Austria

One of the most important criteria for a brothel to be considered legal in Austria is the possession of an official license or permit. Obtaining this license requires adherence to several conditions:

    • Application Process: Brothel owners must apply through the local municipal authority. This involves submitting detailed documentation about the premises, ownership, and intended operations.
    • Location Restrictions: Many municipalities enforce zoning laws that restrict brothel locations to specific areas, often away from schools, churches, or residential neighborhoods.
    • Building Standards: Licensed brothels must meet health, safety, and fire regulations. The premises should be suitable for the activities conducted, ensuring privacy and security for workers and clients.
    • Criminal Background Checks: Operators and sometimes workers undergo checks to prevent individuals with criminal records related to exploitation or trafficking from participating in the business.

Failure to comply with these licensing requirements means the brothel is operating illegally and can face fines, closure, or criminal charges.

    Health and Safety Regulations

A key aspect that makes a brothel legal in Austria is adherence to strict health and safety protocols. The government prioritizes the physical well-being of sex workers and their clients by enforcing regular health check-ups and hygienic working conditions.

Sex workers in legal brothels are required to register with local health authorities and undergo routine medical examinations, including tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These measures help reduce the spread of diseases and ensure that the environment remains safe for all parties involved.

Additionally, brothels must maintain clean and sanitary facilities. This includes regular cleaning schedules, provision of condoms and lubricants, and ensuring that rooms are well-ventilated and secure.

Rights and Protections for Sex Workers

Legal brothels in Austria operate under a framework that grants sex workers several rights and protections. This legal recognition helps reduce stigma and exploitation, promoting safer working conditions.

Sex workers in licensed establishments have the right to:

    • Work voluntarily without coercion
    • Access health care and social services
    • Report abuses or exploitation without fear of legal repercussions
    • Receive fair wages and work under regulated conditions

Furthermore, legal brothels often provide support systems such as counseling and access to legal advice, which contribute to the overall safety and well-being of the workers.

    Taxes and Financial Transparency

Operating a legal brothel in Austria also involves financial transparency and tax compliance. Brothel owners are required to register their business for tax purposes and declare their income accordingly. This financial regulation helps discourage illegal money flows and ensures that operators contribute to the public economy.

Clients and workers also benefit from this transparency, as it fosters a legitimate marketplace where transactions are recorded and protected under law.

    Common Challenges in Maintaining Legality

Despite clear regulations, brothel operators in Austria often face challenges in maintaining compliance. Regional differences in laws can cause confusion, especially for businesses operating near borders of federal states.

Additionally, social stigma and local opposition sometimes lead to political pressure to restrict or close down brothels. Operators must stay informed about changes in legislation and community attitudes to avoid legal pitfalls.

Illegal operations remain a problem in some areas, with unlicensed brothels posing risks such as exploitation, trafficking, and unsafe working conditions. Authorities actively monitor and shut down such establishments to protect workers and uphold the law.

    Conclusion

Understanding what makes a brothel legal in Austria requires awareness of the licensing procedures, health and safety requirements, worker rights, and financial regulations. Legal brothels operate within a structured framework designed to protect all parties involved while ensuring public order and health. For anyone involved in the industry, staying informed and compliant with the laws is crucial to operating legally and ethically.

Whether you are a business owner, sex worker, or client, recognizing the importance of these regulations helps support a safer and more transparent environment in the Austrian sex industry.

This article explores the question: can tourists visit brothels in Austria legally?

Legal Status of Prostitution in Austria

Prostitution is legal and regulated in Austria, which distinguishes it from many other countries where the activity might be illegal or heavily restricted. The country has implemented laws that govern the operation of brothels, the rights and responsibilities of sex workers, and the conditions under which prostitution can take place.

Each Austrian state (Bundesland) may have its own specific regulations, but the general framework ensures that prostitution is recognized as a legitimate form of work. This means that brothels operate under licenses, health checks are mandatory for sex workers, and various safety and hygiene standards must be met.

Can Tourists Visit Brothels in Austria?

Yes, tourists can visit brothels in Austria legally, provided they comply with the country’s laws and the specific rules of the establishment. There are no legal restrictions preventing foreigners from accessing brothels. However, visitors should be aware of the legal age restrictions and the importance of respecting the regulations in place.

The legal age for sex work and purchasing sexual services in Austria is 18 years. Anyone under this age is strictly prohibited from participating in or engaging with prostitution activities. Additionally, sex workers must be registered and undergo regular health screenings to ensure safety for both workers and clients.

What Should Tourists Know Before Visiting a Brothel?

While visiting a brothel in Austria is legal for tourists, there are several important points to keep in mind:

    • Respect the Rules: Brothels have their own house rules, including codes of conduct and payment policies. It’s essential to follow these to avoid any misunderstandings or legal issues.
    • Consent is Key: All interactions between clients and sex workers must be consensual. Forced or coercive behavior is illegal and punishable by law.
    • Health and Safety: Austrian brothels enforce strict health regulations. This includes mandatory use of protection and regular medical checks for sex workers. Clients should also be mindful of hygiene and safety.
    • Privacy and Discretion: Many brothels prioritize discretion for their clients. Tourists should respect the privacy of workers and other clients alike.

Brothels in Austria are typically found in larger cities and urban areas such as Vienna, Graz, and Salzburg. These establishments vary in size and style, from discreet lounges to more elaborate venues. Many brothels operate openly and legally, often located in areas designated for such businesses to minimize disruption to the general public.

    Understanding the Cultural Context

Prostitution in Austria is not merely tolerated; it is integrated into the social and legal fabric. This pragmatic approach aims to ensure the safety and rights of sex workers while minimizing illegal activities such as human trafficking and exploitation.

For tourists, understanding this context is crucial. Unlike some countries where prostitution may be stigmatized or hidden, in Austria it is openly acknowledged and regulated. This transparency allows for safer, more respectful interactions between clients and workers.

    Potential Legal Issues to Avoid

While visiting brothels is legal, tourists should be cautious about certain activities that may lead to legal trouble:

    • Unlicensed Brothels: Engaging with unlicensed or underground brothels is illegal and can have serious consequences.

  • Is Prostitution Legal in Austria?

    Is Prostitution Legal in Austria?

Prostitution laws in Austria have a unique structure that balances regulation with protection for those involved in the sex industry. Understanding the legal framework around prostitution in Austria is essential, whether you’re a resident, a visitor, or someone interested in comparative legal systems. T

his article breaks down the key elements of Austria’s prostitution laws, offering a comprehensive overview of what is legal, what is prohibited, and how the government manages this complex sector.

Overview of Prostitution Laws in Austria

Prostitution is legal and regulated in Austria, but the laws vary by region due to the country’s federal structure. Each of Austria’s nine states (Bundesländer) has the authority to set specific regulations, which means the rules can differ significantly depending on where you are. However, some core principles apply nationwide, such as the requirement for sex workers to register and undergo regular health checks.

The Austrian approach is grounded in harm reduction and public health, aiming to protect sex workers while controlling illegal activities often linked to prostitution, such as human trafficking and exploitation.

    Registration and Health Regulations

One of the most important aspects of prostitution laws in Austria is the mandatory registration of sex workers. To work legally, individuals must register with local authorities, which involves providing identification and undergoing medical examinations. These health checks are designed to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and ensure that sex workers receive regular health support.

Failure to register can result in fines or other penalties. Registered sex workers are issued a license or permit, which they must carry while working. The registration process also helps authorities monitor the industry and combat illegal activities.

Legal Age and Consent in Prostitution

In Austria, the legal age for prostitution is 18 years old. Engaging in sex work below this age is strictly illegal and treated as a form of exploitation or trafficking. Consent is a fundamental aspect, and all parties involved must be adults who freely agree to participate in the transaction.

Authorities impose strict penalties on anyone who coerces or forces individuals into prostitution, emphasizing the protection of vulnerable groups. This is part of Austria’s broader commitment to human rights and combating trafficking networks.

    Prostitution Venues and Zoning Laws

The regulation of where prostitution can take place is a key part of the legal framework. Many Austrian cities have designated zones where sex work is allowed, often referred to as “red-light districts.” These areas are monitored by the police and local authorities to ensure safety and compliance with the law.

Brothels and other commercial establishments must also comply with local zoning laws, which can include restrictions on location, hours of operation, and hygiene standards. In some regions, street prostitution is permitted under certain conditions, while in others, it may be restricted or banned.

    Taxation and Social Benefits

Sex workers in Austria who are registered and working legally are subject to taxation like any other self-employed individuals. They pay income taxes and social security contributions, which entitle them to benefits such as health insurance and pensions. This formal recognition helps integrate sex workers into the social security system, providing a degree of financial security.

The taxation system also reinforces the legitimacy of legal prostitution and helps fund public services related to health and safety in the industry.

    Illegal Activities and Enforcement

While prostitution itself is legal, many associated activities remain illegal under Austrian law. These include pimping, human trafficking, exploitation, and operating unlicensed brothels. Law enforcement agencies actively target these crimes to protect sex workers and uphold public order.

Authorities also crack down on illegal prostitution, which often operates underground without registration or health checks. Such activities pose significant risks to sex workers and the community, as they are linked to crime and exploitation.

    Support Services for Sex Workers

Austria provides various support services for sex workers, including health clinics, counseling, and legal assistance. NGOs and government programs work together to ensure that sex workers have access to resources that promote their well-being and safety.

These services emphasize voluntary participation and confidentiality, aiming to empower sex workers to make informed decisions about their lives and work. Support programs also play a crucial role in helping those who wish to leave the industry.

    Recent Developments and Public Debate

The prostitution laws in Austria have evolved over time, reflecting changing social attitudes and policy priorities. Public debate often centers on balancing regulation with individual freedom, protecting vulnerable persons, and addressing issues such as trafficking and exploitation.

In recent years, there has been increased focus on improving working conditions for sex workers and strengthening measures against trafficking. Some regions have introduced new regulations to tighten controls, while others have emphasized harm reduction and support services.

    Conclusion

Prostitution laws in Austria present a model of legalized and regulated sex work that prioritizes health, safety, and human rights. While prostitution itself is legal, it is closely monitored through registration, health checks, zoning laws, and taxation. Illegal activities related to prostitution are strictly prohibited and actively prosecuted.

Understanding these laws is crucial for anyone involved in or studying the sex industry in Austria. By combining regulation with support and enforcement, Austria aims to create a safer environment for sex workers and reduce the negative consequences often associated with prostitution.

  • Vienna’s Red-Light Scene: Facts, Laws, and Misconceptions

Vienna’s Red-Light Scene: Facts, Laws, and Misconceptions

Vienna has a long-established and legally regulated red-light scene. Sex work is legal in Austria under specific conditions, and the city of Vienna actively regulates where and how adult services may operate. According to official city and federal sources, adult services in Vienna include licensed sex clubs, studios, escort agencies, limited street prostitution zones, and a registered population of sex workers, alongside a smaller number of illegal or unregistered activities.

Understanding Vienna’s red-light scene requires looking at how it is structured by law, how it actually operates, and where common misconceptions do not match reality.

The Legal Status of Sex Work in Vienna

Sex work between consenting adults is legal in Austria. In Vienna, this activity is regulated by both federal law and city-level regulations.

Sex workers must be of legal age, register with authorities, and comply with health and administrative requirements. Operators of sex clubs, studios, and similar venues must hold valid licenses and follow strict rules regarding location, safety, and hygiene.

These facts are confirmed by the City of Vienna’s official information on prostitution .

Sex work is not allowed everywhere. Vienna enforces protection zones where prostitution is prohibited, such as near schools, churches, and certain residential areas.

Street prostitution is permitted only in specifically designated streets and only under defined conditions. Violations of these rules are subject to fines and enforcement actions.

Don’t miss this article about the legal framework of sex work:

    Registered Sex Workers in Vienna

Austria maintains a registration system for sex workers. Publicly available data does not always provide up-to-date city-specific numbers, but historical and aggregated statistics show that Vienna consistently has over 1,000 registered sex workers, making it the largest single concentration in Austria due to population size and tourism .

Registration includes administrative reporting and regular health requirements. This system is designed to make legal sex work visible and enforceable, rather than hidden.

Licensed Sex Clubs, Studios, and Escort Services

Vienna does not publish a single official list showing the exact number of licensed sex clubs operating at any given time. However, it is publicly documented that multiple licensed sex clubs and brothels operate legally in Vienna, alongside studios and escort agencies that function under business licenses .

Well-known venues, such as Maxim Vienna, are publicly documented examples of licensed brothels operating within this framework . These venues operate indoors, employ registered sex workers, and are subject to inspections.

Escort services and studios usually work by appointment and offer a different format from clubs, but they must still comply with the same legal standards.

Don’t miss our article about the best brothels:

    Illegal and Unregistered Sex Work

Despite regulation, illegal sex work does exist in Vienna. This includes unregistered individuals, illegal apartment brothels, and street prostitution outside permitted zones. Austrian police regularly investigate and shut down illegal operations, as confirmed by publicly reported enforcement actions and inspections .

Authorities and NGOs agree that illegal sex work represents a minority of the overall scene but remains an ongoing issue, particularly in private apartments advertised online.

Common Misconceptions About Vienna’s Red-Light Scene

One common misconception is that Vienna’s red-light scene is uncontrolled. In reality, it is one of the most regulated systems in Europe, with clear rules on registration, licensing, and location.

Another myth is that street prostitution is the main form of sex work in Vienna. Official sources confirm that most sex work happens indoors, in licensed venues or through escort services, while street prostitution is limited and geographically restricted .

There is also a widespread belief that all sex workers are exploited.

While exploitation is a serious issue that authorities actively monitor, Austria’s legal model is designed to reduce exploitation by making sex work visible and regulated rather than illegal.

    red light district in Vienna

    Consent and Professional Boundaries

Consent is a legal and practical requirement in Vienna’s adult industry. Sex workers have the right to refuse any service, define their own limits, and withdraw consent at any time. Professional venues clearly communicate house rules, and clients are expected to respect them.

Paying for a service does not mean unlimited access. Services are negotiated individually and depend on mutual agreement.

Compared to cities where sex work is illegal or unofficially tolerated, Vienna’s approach emphasizes regulation and oversight.

This allows authorities to enforce health standards, workplace rules, and tax obligations. While no system is without problems, Vienna’s model aims to reduce harm by keeping the industry within legal boundaries.

    Conclusion

Vienna’s red-light scene is shaped by law, regulation, and enforcement rather than fantasy. Sex work is legal under strict conditions, with over a thousand registered sex workers, multiple licensed venues, and ongoing police action against illegal operations. Street prostitution exists but is limited and tightly controlled.

Understanding these facts helps replace myths with reality. Vienna’s adult industry is not hidden chaos, but a regulated system that operates within clearly defined legal limits.

  • Street Prostitution in Vienna: Why It Should Be Banned and Nightclubs Are the Better Alternative

Street Prostitution in Vienna: Why It Should Be Banned and Nightclubs Are the Better Alternative

Austria has one of the most open legal systems for prostitution in Europe. In Vienna, sex work is legal as long as workers register, complete health checks, and operate within regulated environments such as brothels, private apartments, or nightclubs.

Street prostitution, however, is still allowed in certain zones of the city, especially near the Gürtel road and in parts of the Prater district. While the idea is that regulation makes it safer, street prostitution remains a controversial practice.

Compared to other forms of sex work, it exposes both workers and clients to humiliation, danger, and poor conditions. This article explains why street prostitution should be banned and why nightclubs offer a much better alternative for both sex workers and customers.

Why Clients Should Avoid Street Prostitution

Low Quality and Unsafe Experiences: Street prostitution attracts a type of customer who is usually not looking for quality. Unlike high-end escort services or elegant nightclubs, clients on the street are often looking for the cheapest option.

Can anyone imagine a millionaire with refined taste searching along dark streets for a sex worker? Most likely not.

This means that clients choosing street services are more likely to encounter unsafe conditions, poor hygiene, and potentially exploitative arrangements.

Constant Police Controls: In Vienna, police regularly monitor the zones where street prostitution is legal. They check paperwork, registration, and health cards.

For customers, this creates an intimidating atmosphere. A simple encounter can turn into questioning or public embarrassment.

In nightclubs, clients enter a safe, discreet environment without constant fear of being interrupted by police checks.

Hygiene Problems: Street prostitution often takes place in vans, cars, or other makeshift locations. These places rarely meet even the most basic standards of cleanliness. A mattress in a shady van does not compare to the clean, maintained rooms of a licensed nightclub.

Customers not only risk their comfort but also their health when choosing the street over professional venues.

Why Women Should Avoid Street Prostitution

Humiliation and Lack of Respect: Standing on a street corner in full view of strangers is humiliating for many women. Unlike a respectable, organized job, it reduces them to objects under public scrutiny. In nightclubs, women can work in an environment where privacy, respect, and professionalism are emphasized.

Exploitation by Pimps: Street prostitution almost always involves pimps. They claim to be there for protection, but in reality, they take a large share of the women’s earnings and limit their independence. In licensed nightclubs, workers are free from this direct control. They can keep their own money, work with management under fairer rules, and enjoy greater autonomy.

Don’t miss this article to know how you can recognize a pimp-controlled situation:

Unstable Earnings: Street work is unpredictable. Weather conditions play a huge role. A rainy or cold evening means fewer clients and less income. Nightclubs, on the other hand, operate indoors, with steady customer flow and more reliable earnings. Women working in clubs can plan their finances, while on the street every day is uncertain.

Police Stress and Legal Pressure: Just like clients, women face constant police controls when working on the street. While legal, the process is stressful. Officers check IDs, licenses, and health cards, which can feel like harassment. Nightclubs provide a stable, legal, and safe working environment without constant interruptions.

Poor Hygiene and Unsafe Settings: On the street, women do not have access to toilets, showers, or safe places to rest. Instead, they often work in cars or vans under unsanitary conditions. Nightclubs solve this problem by offering clean rooms, proper facilities, and professional standards that protect both the workers and the clients.

Why Nightclubs Are the Better Alternative

Professional and Safe Environment: Nightclubs in Vienna are licensed and regulated. This means that they meet hygiene standards, provide clean working spaces, and often have security staff to protect both clients and workers. The atmosphere is professional, and women are treated as employees rather than street objects.

Discretion and Privacy: In a nightclub, everything happens indoors and out of the public eye. Clients can enjoy their evening in comfort, while women can perform their work without being stared at by strangers. This level of privacy benefits both sides and removes the humiliation that comes with street work.

More Respect for Workers: Women in nightclubs are seen as professionals. They work in a business setting, often alongside colleagues, and are not exposed to the degrading conditions of the street. This respect allows them to feel more confident and dignified in their work.

Reliable Income: Nightclubs provide a more consistent customer base. Weather does not affect business, and clients are usually more serious and respectful than those on the street. Women can rely on steadier income, plan their schedules, and avoid the financial uncertainty of outdoor work.

Reduced Exploitation: Without pimps controlling their every move, women in nightclubs have more independence. They can negotiate terms, keep their earnings, and make decisions about their work. This freedom is essential for improving their quality of life and safety.

Don’t miss our essential guide about what you can expect in a premium nightclub in Vienna:

    Conclusion

Street prostitution in Vienna may still be legal in certain zones, but it is far from safe or respectable. For clients, it means poor hygiene, low quality, constant police checks, and the risk of scams or unsafe encounters. For women, it brings humiliation, exploitation by pimps, unpredictable income, and unhealthy working conditions.

Nightclubs, on the other hand, provide clean facilities, professional environments, and greater safety for both workers and clients. Women can work with dignity, enjoy more stable earnings, and escape the humiliations of the street. Clients benefit from privacy, comfort, and a higher level of service.

Banning street prostitution while supporting legal, regulated venues such as nightclubs would improve the lives of sex workers and protect clients. Vienna has already shown that legal and professional prostitution can work. Now it is time to take the next step and remove the last form of sex work that continues to harm both the women and the customers: street prostitution.

Legal sex work protects women from crime and violence

Recently we are seeing more people calling for the ban of prostitution, saying that women are exploited and that the current situation is bad for them. However, facts show a different picture.

The head of the SOPHIE advice center for sex workers recently said in an interview

that banning legal sex work would only worsen the ladies’ situation. For more details about this and more, continue reading the article now!

The SOPHIE advice center is against a ban on buying sex

SOPHIE is an advice center for sex workers in Austria that also helps the ladies with whatever is necessary. They offer consultations for sex workers anonymously and at no cost, they give basic supplies and anything that’s needed for the women to start working legally. Their main goal is to protect women who are in the legal sex trade, fight for their rights and provide them with better and safer working conditions.

The head of the organization has stated that they are 100% against the ban on legal sex work, as this would only introduce a plethora of different problems for the ladies. Naturally, stopping prostitution entirely is almost impossible and if legal sex work would be banned, the whole sex trade business would go underground.

This would mean that the women who had to work illegally couldn’t ask for help and they would be exploited even more by pimps and human traffickers.

Assaults on sex workers by customers are on the rise, so this would get out of hand without protection as well.

Julia Köhl, the head of the SOPHIE counseling center added that they still require donations as many sex workers had huge monetary losses this year due to various factors. Currently, many women require the help from humanitarian organizations and food donations, among other things.

Why you should avoid illegal apartment prostitution

Apartment prostitution has always been a problem in Vienna and this has become more apparent since the COVID-19 pandemic started. More women are trying to offer their services through illegal means, and the police have raided many such apartments in the last two years.

Working illegally from apartments in Vienna is dangerous from a health, as well as a financial situation. In this blog post, we will discuss a couple of reasons against illegal apartment prostitution in Wien. For more details keep reading now!

Illegal apartment prostitution can get you in trouble with the authorities

Since police has started to raid these types of apartments, many women have been fined and even banned from the country. When caught, the ladies face huge fines and lose access to their apartment. The landlords who own the apartment also receive a fine and might even have their apartment closed or taken away from them.

As a result of this, illegal prostitution can be very dangerous and the women can lose their hard earned money and source of income in an instant. Clients also face fines if they are caught when the police raid the apartment.

Working illegally can be very dangerous

In addition to having to fear the authorities, women who work illegally cannot feel safe with their clients either. Any of them could potentially be there to harm them, they could steal anything from the apartment or they could in fact be undercover cops.

Having access to the protective measures that are offered by legally operated brothels is very important in keeping the ladies safe. Brothels in Vienna usually have cameras installed, trained security on site and they have someone they can ask for help when needed. Women who work through legal means also receive health and financial benefits.

Illegally working women do not get regular health checks

Another problem that arises with illegal apartment prostitution is the fact that the sex workers do not have to visit the doctor for their regular health check. Because of this, sexually transmitted diseases could be passed along, as well as anything else that’s infectious. This can be dangerous for everyone that’s involved and could lead to health, as well as social issues.

Women who work legally are required to get checked by a doctor and they are tested for STDs regularly. This is important for the sex workers, as well as the clients who visit them and makes legal prostitution a much safer option.

  • Information about legal sex work in Austria

Information about legal sex work in Austria

As most of you probably already know, sex work is legalized in Austria, but there are many laws that need to be followed, and these laws differ depending on which federal state we are talking about. In this article, we will be looking at some of these laws and what women need to do to work legally as sex workers. If you’re interested, be sure to continue reading this post till the end!

Sex work is legal, but regulated

In Austria, adult women are allowed to work as sex workers, but they are required to follow a set of rules and laws. For example, the women who wish to work as prostitutes need to undergo health and STD checks on a regular basis. All women are required to be checked by doctors if they wish to work legally in any type of brothel in Austria. Additionally, the women who work as sex workers need to be registered and they need to pay health insurance and taxes according to how much they make.

However, there are additional laws that need to be followed, but these laws differ depending on the state that the women are working in. For example, Vorarlberg has the strictest prostitution laws in the country and women are only allowed to work in legally operated brothels. However, at the time of writing this post, there are currently no brothels in the state where the women could legally work.

Sex workers need to follow the regulations carefully

Different states have different laws about prostitution. For example, escort services are allowed in Vienna, with hardly any specific rules. However, in Burgenland and Lower Austria escorts can only visit customers if there are no children living in the apartment or house. Upper Austria and Styria also has similar rules with only allowing escorts to visit clients in case there are no minors present. Additionally, some states do not allow escort work and the women can only work in brothels.

Women who wish to start working in this field are required to carefully see what, where and when they are allowed to do if they do not want to get into trouble with the local authorities. Since each of the federal states have different laws and regulations, this can also hugely impact where the women pursue this career.

Prostitution and human trafficking isn’t the same

Unfortunately there are still many cases of human trafficking today, but there are also many women who choose to pursue this career out of their own will. Prostitution can be very lucrative for the women and they can make a lot of money depending on where and how they work. Additionally, sex workers who work legally are usually protected by the authorities and their employers, such as brothel owners. This makes their field of work safer to some extent. Unfortunately there are still many sex workers who try to work from illegal apartments, especially now with the current Coronavirus laws in place.

Some people think that a ban on prostitution altogether could help reduce human trafficking, but it would actually have the opposite effect. Making prostitution illegal would mean taking away the support the women currently get, as well as the protection. This would make the job of human traffickers much easier and they could exploit more women without the authorities knowing about it. Having a regulated system makes it easier to identify victims of trafficking and help them.

    Summary

As you can see, although prostitution is generally allowed in Austria, the laws and regulations differ depending on the federal state that we are talking about. Women who wish to start working in this field of work have to pay close attention to what they are allowed to do and what is prohibited in that particular state.

However, even with the many regulations, legal prostitution is still a very lucrative job that many women pursue out of their own free will. On the other hand, there are also many women who are forced into prostitution without their consent. Because of this, new laws and regulations are constantly being introduced in order to make the whole system safer and overall better for the ladies.

  • Changes to the Green Card Health Exam in Vienna

Changes to the Green Card Health Exam in Vienna

Since the restrictions have been lifted on July 1st, all women who wish to work in Vienna have to get tested and need a green card that shows that they are healthy. The women are only able to work legally if they undergo the green card health exam; however, the waiting times for these exams were very long due to the number of applicants. This might change, as we’ve recently been informed that women can now book their appointments online, through the Center for Sexual Health website. For more information about this new online application form and how it works, keep reading the post.

In case you have missed our previous post about the green card that the women need and what the long waiting times resulted in, be sure to read the following text: Increase in the number of illegally operated apartments in Vienna

How to apply online for the green card health exam?

Booking an appointment online has been made simple and the form can be completed within a few minutes. When you visit the Zentrum für sexuelle Gesundheit (Center for Sexual Health) website, you have two options to choose from. The left button (Erstuntersuchung) is for women who wish to book their first health examination. This option is for women who have never booked an appointment or for those whose last exam was more than 6 months ago. The button on the right (Folgeuntersuchung) is for women who have previously been on one of these examinations and have their ID cards. Women who go on their regular 6-week check-up will have to use this option.

If this is the first time visiting the Center for Sexual Health website a profile creation is required. This profile will be used for any examination appointments from now on. Once the registration has been complete, the women can book their appointments in order to receive their green cards and be eligible to work legally in Vienna.

    Conclusion

Women can still call and make their appointments that way, but we feel this online booking form will make it much easier for the ladies to book their examinations. Since July 1st, the main problem was the fact that some women needed to wait up to a few months before their exams. Hopefully, now everybody who wants to work in Vienna will get the chance to do so.

International Loverboy Gang Busted by Law Enforcement in Vienna

Recently, an international gang that used the loverboy method to lure in unsecure women has been arrested by the cooperation of the Viennese, Romanian and Great Britain police departments. This illegal prostitution gang has been forcing young women into prostitution for years and they have accumulated millions of euros in profit in this time. Read on to find out more about this gang, as well as the loverboy method now!

What does the loverboy method mean?

If you are unfamiliar with the loverboy term, it’s basically a method that some people use to lure unsuspecting women into illegal prostitution. The man who uses the loverboy method lures in unsuspecting ladies with gifts and promises, just to later sell her into illegal and forced prostitution in another country.

The women who fall victim to this method think that they have finally found a man they can trust and love, but this is just an act. The loverboy usually promises a good job in another country, with which he lures the girl to leave her home country.

Once they have arrived to the destination, the women have their passports taken away from them and forced into having paid sex for the trafficker’s profit. The women who fall victim to this method are usually threatened verbally and they also have to endure physical abuse.

    International Loverboy Gang in Europe

According to our sources, the gang has been forcing women into prostitution for years and most of the women had to work in Vienna. Reports show that the women who were forced into prostitution were between the ages of 18 and 40. Some of the women were sold to other gangs who paid up to 8,000 euros for the women.

The gang has been operating in three different countries since 2012 and made a huge profit with this method. The police forces in Romania have raided 16 houses and arrested 22 suspects, some of which are thought to be the leaders of the Vienna branch of the illegal prostitution gang.

According to police reports, multiple luxury cars, weapons, cash, jewels and other luxury commodities have been seized. After the arrests, 15 suspects have been kept in for questioning. In Great Britain, two suspects have been arrested and brought in for questioning who are thought to be linked to this international loverboy gang. In Vienna there were no arrests yet, but law enforcement officers have seized documents and cell phone information from the suspects.

According to police reports, the leaders behind this gang have disguised their operations behind a family run gold-trading business. Sources indicate that the gang had connections in Cyprus, Switzerland, Turkey, Germany, Romania and Austria since 2012. Additionally, the gang is also suspected to have put counterfeit British pounds on the market as well, totalling to over 1,115,000 euros in profit.

    Conclusion on the loverboy gang

Illegal and forced prostitution is still a huge problem in the 21st century and many women are brought into this life every year. The loverboy method is one of the most common ways gang members lure insecure women into illegal prostitution. Law enforcement is trying to arrest the people behind these types of operations, but this is a hard task since there are so many gangs that use this to force women into illegal prostitution. Hopefully, we will be able to report more similar cases where the loverboys get arrested and the women who are forced are let go.
