The German state of Thuringia now has more registered sex workers than last year, new government numbers show. But there are still fewer than before the coronavirus pandemic hit.
At the end of 2023, officials counted 242 registered sex workers in Thuringia. That’s 73 more people than in 2022. But back in 2019, before COVID, there were 384 registered workers. Sex work includes people who work at brothels, escorts, and actors in adult movies.
Where the Workers Come From
The numbers show that many sex workers come from other countries. Of those registered, 54 were from Romania, 40 from Hungary, and 37 from Bulgaria. Most workers were between 21 and 45 years old.
Most registrations happened in two places: Gotha district (31 percent) and the city of Erfurt (27 percent).
How COVID Changed Things
The pandemic hurt the sex work industry in Thuringia and nearby countries like Austria. Studies show that about one-third of legal sex businesses and registered workers vanished during COVID.
When brothels had to close, more people started working illegally from apartments. In Vienna, Austria, police found only 40 cases of apartment prostitution in 2019. By 2021, that number jumped to 867 cases. Even after COVID rules ended, hundreds of cases still happen each year.
Austria saw similar drops: from about 8,000 registered sex workers before the pandemic to around 5,000 in 2023.
Why Legal Registration Helps
As we already wrote many times, unregulated sex work is dangerous. When workers aren’t registered, they don’t get health checkups, licenses, or protection from authorities. This puts them at risk and in the meantime, these women can spread sexually transmitted diseases without any control.
