A 66-year-old man on prison leave shot two people in Traiskirchen before commiting suicide. One person was killed, and a 25-year-old woman was seriously injured. The shooter, Josef P., was a convicted repeat offender.
He shot his former girlfriend
The shooting took place on Badener Straße, near the local cemetery in a business area. Josef P. first shot a 25-year-old woman, who was then taken to a hospital in Vienna and remains in critical condition. He then shot and killed a 55-year-old man, Thomas H., at the scene. A knife was also involved, according to police reports.
Josef P. left the scene by car. A few hours later, he was found dead in a nearby vineyard. Authorities report that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was under an official weapons ban at the time of the attack.
Background and investigation
Josef P. had a long criminal history, including domestic violence. He was serving a prison sentence and was participating in a reintegration program that allowed temporary leaves. The Justice Ministry confirmed that he had previously completed several leaves without incident. His sentence was scheduled to end in December.
The State Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation. Police conducted a search of his home in Tribuswinkel later the same day with the support of a special operations unit. Authorities are also investigating the relationships between the shooter and the victims.
