Murders at Studio 126a – Afghan asylum seeker to receive mental health treatment

Earlier this year, three young women were murdered at an erotic studio in Vienna’s Brigittenau district. The suspect, a 27-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, is currently being considered for placement in a forensic mental health facility after an expert report concluded that he was mentally unfit at the time of the crime. The man was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and is now expected to participate in the trial as a victim rather than a defendant.

The incident occurred on February 23 at “Studio 126a” on Engerthstraße, where the suspect attacked and killed three women of Asian descent using a knife. According to court expert Peter Hofmann, the suspect acted under the influence of a severe mental disorder. The bodies of the victims were found with significant injuries, indicating multiple stab wounds.

Details of the crime

The suspect claimed to have found a verse in the Quran that he believed instructed him to wage jihad against perceived enemies. He later purchased three knives at a supermarket, intending to target prostitutes, whom he regarded as witches.

The suspect had arrived in Austria in late 2021, traveling through Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary. Prior to his arrival, he reportedly believed that a refugee worker had bewitched him, further contributing to his disturbed state.

On the day of the murders, the suspect left his apartment in the evening to attend Friday prayers at a mosque, carrying the knives with him. At approximately 8 p.m., he rang the doorbell at the erotic studio. Once inside, he followed the operator upstairs and was assigned a room. Upon entering, he attacked the first victim with 16 stab wounds. He then proceeded to stab a second woman 20 times and later found the operator, who had attempted to hide in a bathroom, inflicting more than 60 stab wounds.

Court and community response

Court expert Hofmann characterized the attack as a rampage aimed at killing as many people as possible in a short time. The trial date is yet to be determined. The suspect’s lawyer, Philipp Springer, expressed optimism that advancements in schizophrenia treatment could eventually allow the man to return to his family in Iran.

The case has drawn criticism, particularly from the violence prevention group “StoP – Neighborhoods Without Partner Violence.” The group expressed concern over the decision to classify the suspect as a victim in court, questioning how someone who planned and carried out multiple murders could be declared unaccountable. StoP highlighted the broader issue of violence against women and called the decision a dangerous precedent.
